Chinese Super League sees mass exodus of foreign players after ‘loss to Saudi Arabia’

China’s “golden age of soccer,” where players were collected for huge salaries, may be coming to an end.

In September, in the middle of the season, there has been an exodus of highly paid mercenaries from China.

On September 4, Shandong Taishan announced the departure of captain Marouane Fellaini. “After mutual negotiations, Marouane Fellaini will leave the team at the end of this season. We fully respect Fellaini’s decision and thank him for being our eternal captain.”

Fellaini has scored 51 goals and provided eight assists in 130 games for Shandong Taishan. He has helped Shandong Taishan win the league title and three consecutive FA Cups, most notably with his physical “header football” style of play, which he also utilized during his time at Manchester United.

Wuhan ShenZhen striker Nicolae Stanchiu also joined Saudi Arabia’s Damac FC.

With a devastating record of 11 goals and 26 assists in 53 games for Wuhan Shanjian, he played a crucial role in helping the club win the first division title in its history the year after winning promotion from the second division.

In addition, local media in China are pointing to the departure of a number of high-paid players, including Oscar (Shanghai Haigang), who was the highest-paid player in the history of the Chinese Super League.

Oscar first joined Shanghai Haigang in 2017. Based on his 2020 contract, his weekly salary is worth €450,000 ($600,000).

In the winter of 2022, in the middle of the season, Oscar left the team on a “special vacation” and negotiated a transfer to Flamengo. It looks like his ‘escape’ will be successful this time around.
