Former OB Bears coach Kim Young-deok, who was the ‘first Korean professional baseball winning command tower’, has passed away.
Former coach Kim Young-deok passed away on the 21st. He is 87 years old.
Kim’s bereaved family said, “His father enjoyed playing golf and went for walks and was healthy, but in the last one or two years, his health has deteriorated.” told
He added, “Since my father is a Korean-Japanese, he had no connections in Korean baseball. He really loved Korean baseball, but he was misunderstood during his coaching days and after his retirement.”
Born in Japan in 1936, former coach Kim was active as a pitcher for the Nankai Hawks of the Japanese professional baseball from 1956 to 1963.
After he came to Korea in 1964, he dominated the domestic unemployment league with his slider.
The deceased, who started his career as a manager and player at Hanil Bank in 1970, rose to the first command tower of the OB Bears in 1982, when Korean professional baseball was launched.
OB became the first Korean professional baseball champion and won the title of ‘first championship command tower’.
Former coach Kim continued his coaching career at Samsung Lions and Binggrae Eagles. He achieved 707 wins, 20 draws and 480 losses (0.596 win rate) in 1,207 matches as the Korean professional baseball command tower.
Former coach Kim, the first-generation leader of Korean professional baseball, was respected by many Korean baseball juniors even after “his leadership retirement.”
Former Hanwha Eagles manager Kim Seong-geun, who kept dugout with former manager Kim Young-deok as a pitching coach at OB in 1982, said, “Since I was in Japan, I have received a lot of help from senior Kim Young-deok. I looked for seniors and asked for advice,” he recalled.
Former manager Kim Seong-geun commemorated, “Senior Kim Young-deok was a person who could contribute to Korean baseball even after retiring as a manager, but he did not have the opportunity. It is very regrettable that he missed the opportunity to learn from that experience.”
