South Korea clinches 2nd place in Group F, draws 0-0 with Gambia, faces Ecuador in Round of 16

South Korea advances to the Round of 16 with a draw in its final group game, finishing second in Group F.

The South Korea U-20 national football team, led by head coach Kim Eun-joong, drew 0-0 with Gambia in their third Group F match of the FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 at the Mendoza Stadium in Argentina on May 29 (local time).

With one win, two draws and five points, South Korea advances to the round of 16 as Group F’s runner-up.

Heading into the match, both Gambia, with two wins, and South Korea, with one win and one draw, had secured their spot in the Round of 16 regardless of the final result. Both teams rotated in and out of the game, and it was an exploratory affair.

In the 21st minute, Bojang had a chance for a no-mark header, but his shot went wide of the goal. The first half ended scoreless.

South Korea brought on Kang Sang-yoon to start the second half. In the 11th minute of the second half, Kang Sung-jin’s shot from outside the box was saved by the goalkeeper.

South Korea brought on Kim Yong-hak and Bae Joon-ho in the 13th minute and Lee Seung-jun in the 26th minute to keep their stamina up. 안전놀이터

In the 34th minute, Kim Yong-hak slipped a pass to Munjeon after a brilliant ball control, but he couldn’t reach his teammate. In the 37th minute, Bo-Jang’s shot from a momentary penetration into the box sailed just wide of the goal.

South Korea made several attacks, led by Kim Yong-hak’s solo effort, but could not find the back of the net. The match ended in a draw, with the Gambia topping the group and South Korea advancing to the Round of 16 as the runners-up.

South Korea, who finished second in the group, will face Ecuador in the Round of 16.
